80's Flashback at Curley's Grill

Not exactly Curley's on Tuesday morning
Last December, Kate and a friend were chatting with Curley Tait inside his bar at Curley's Restaurant in Fortuna when, laughingly, the conversation turned to Jazzercise of the 1980's. Curley chimed in, "You know, I'm a certified Jazzercise instructor." They quieted down when Curley said, "Why don't we start a session right here in my bar on Tuesday and Thursday mornings?"  He chided Kate and her friend to find some friends to join in and they would form a class.  Consequently, Kate wrangled Spence and a few others who went along with great trepidation and Kate's friend convinced a couple more friends and a class was born.  Now, we must tell you, the class of about half a dozen are all over the age of 50, and with the rotating members coming and going, the majority of the members are men.  When only the men attend the class they call it "Guysersize".  Curley says in his 20 years of teaching Jazzercise, men usually came to a few classes, were intimidated by the fit, nimble women and never returned. Now, he's tickled so many men are attending.

The sessions are odd at best.  The tables and chairs in Curley's bar are cleared, Curley cranks up his music machine and off we go.  Delivery guys to the restaurant are surprised when they fling open the back door to see the bar taken over by middle-aged exercisers flailing their arms and legs akimbo.  All the while, the chef staff goes about their business in the kitchen preparing for the day's restaurant trade.

I can't help but think this is kind of disgusting. Can't quite put my finger on it, but that feeling doth lingers...

Yippy ki yay. Great idea, Kate and Spence. Mr. T. knows fun, how to throw a party, and the fine art of good eats. He takes care of his friends and community. Haven't felt this good and happy since Double Gruel Tuesday at the Orphanarium.

Burning up to 600 calories in one fun and powerfully effective 60-minute total body workout amongst Curley’s signature Fiestaware and whimsically fun salt and pepper shakers, yours tuly imagines every fitness session combines dance-based cardio with strength training and stretching to sculpt, tone and lengthen those muscles for maximum fat burn.

You can surrender— later-- to the excellent Caesar, Cobb, or Caprese salads, French Dip Prime Rib sandwich, delicious Turkey with Tomato and Basil on Sourdough, the Tomato Basil Soup, the Moist Tortilla Cake with Tangy Onion Sauce, the Fish and Very Fresh Chips, the Orange Champagne Shrimp, the sorbets and berry sauce, and the superbly devilish pastry desserts by the sweet and aptly named Patience.

Of course… if you’re in the mood between kicks, swings, and pumps, can you tipple a few nice and naughty martinis’s by ever-smiling Sarah to help get one’s game on? Oh! This is morning time. My bad. Well, we’ll just have to incorporate early afternoon sessions soon.

It’s all good—and the gourmet list goes on. You’ll have us svelte and debonair in no time, Kate and Spence. Choreographed to the hottest music in a cheerful and bright atmosphere, Curley’s Jazzercise is undoubtedly a fun and whacky fusion of jazz dance, resistance training, Pilates, yoga, and kickboxing. Legs and arms flying akimbo doin’ the limbo to the cranked up crazed 80s music machine mixed in with mean moves and Curley’s wickedly good humor-- followed by the faithful Crew— we’ll be beautiful, witty, and wearing shorter than short shorts in short order. Fire that order!

Dance yourself fit and change the shape of your body today! Then eat well. Life is good, Fortuna is friendly, Curley rocks… and we’re mighty hungry and thirsty.
