Willow Creek circa 1960. |
Spence: "Quiet, relaxing, well-appointed rental cabins? Check. Warm, sunny weather? Check. Charming shop keepers? Check. River rafting, golfing, scenic mountain drives? Check. Scraggled layabout miscreants with dogs creeping from out of the woods ? Che.....oops. Civilization has come to town. What the rest of Humboldt County has been witnessing for a while, Willow Creek, always about five years behind the times, has it's eyes opened to the rest of the world. They say it all started with the introduction of cable-tv."
Kate: "If recent headlines were laid end to end, it would appear that there is more crime per square foot in Willow Creek than any other town in Humboldt County. It's always something these days for the tiny burg on the Trinity River--murder, kidnapping, and all-around skullduggery. Willow Creekians seem unruffled by it all...whaddya gonna do? Headlines only capture a moment in time, Willow Creek is timeless."

Poor Willow Creek even got a case of rabies. Thankfully, that story had a happy ending.
Idyllic, bucolic...
It was today.
The Trinity river has been beautiful. Folks stayed away the past month or two but are now coming around. Not as many rafters as last year. Temps in the high 80's to 100* last week and today. The water seems about 2 feet higher than normal but not a problem at all. If you stay out of the main current, it's all good. Water crisp, clean, clear. Of course, no forest fire smoke or haze this year; the air is fine. Folks are friendly and there's plenty of room.
In short, conditions are excellent now. Go hit the river, have a good time. Many folks are predicting an early end to this Summer, so August is the month for sun, warmth and your annual water baptism. Go before the sun starts setting lower to close our seasonal window and we hunker down for the cooler months ahead.
Skippy, we fancy that you reside in Willow Creek with your intimate knowledge of the region. We stayed in one of the rental cabins on the West side of town near the fire department. While the accomadations were exquisitely appointed, Kate felt it was just TOO close to nature. She was wondering if Ritz-Carlton or Hyatt had any plans for building a 5-Star hotel in the area. Her idea of "roughing it" is walking barefoot in the lobby of the Waldorf-Astoria.
Nestled between the redwood coast and rugged inland mountains, Willow Creek residents work tirelessly to, um, figure out what the heck jumping the shark means. That being said, they add insult to injury with their own version of that phrase, 'jump the bigfoot'.
Thorstein...You took the words out of our very mouths. Except, "jump the Bigfoot" which has completely different connotations and can get you arrested.
But Bigfoot knows how to tango...
