Don't Call Me Shirley

Happy Birthday, Shirley "Ace" Bartow. He turns 90 on Monday.  Shirley was a Fortuna High sports standout and probably lettered in every sport imaginable during his time. More importantly, he has carried that love of sports throughout his life by coaching, managing, umpiring and playing for the past 80+ years . Drive by the little league fields in Fortuna to see his name emblazoned for all to see.  You can see him out at the golf course throughout the week.

We know Shirley under different circumstances.  He's on the board of the Fortuna Cemetery District. It's too bad he was credited as part of the cemetery's secretarial staff during the credits of a recently aired program for the show, Grave Matters and Untimely Departures on Access Humboldt.  But, surely this isn't the first time he has had his name confused.  And, DO call him Shirley.   There is a birthday celebration for Shirley "Ace" Bartow at the Fortuna Fire Hall on Saturday, Sept. 10th from 2pm to 6pm.

Kinda rare to hear about a man with the name Shirley.

Reminds me of that old Johhny Cash tune about a boy named Sue. The kid had to fight most of his life because of the teasing about his name, and he turned out to be a tough guy.

I know one thing, Shirley is an inspiring kind of guy and we all could all learn a lot from him.
