An Apple A Day

One of Humboldt County's best town events (not mentioned in the North Coast Journal "best of" issue) is the Fortuna Apple Harvest Festival.  This is one of those hometown celebrations that has middle America written all over it.  Wenatchee, Washington. Hendersonville, North Carolina. Ellijay, Georgia and Fortuna, California. All of these towns have Apple Festivals but none as delicious as what the Friendly City offers.  It's Americana to the core. Hay wagon rides, applewood BBQ, street fairs, live music around every corner, kid's activities and apple this and apple that.
Here an apple, there an apple everywhere an apple apple.

But, wait--what about that 6th annual Dutch Oven Cook-off in Rohner Park at 1pm.?
We're excited because Yours Trulys have been selected as two of the "celebrity" judges. Our celebrity status is due to the wild popularity of the Above The Fold blog, no doubt.  Take that, Chocolate Covered Xanax!  You too, Bugs and HH.

Kate's mouth is watering for the Jonagold Apple Pizza and Gravenstein Apple Crisp.  Spence is crossing his fingers for the Granny Smith Nachos.

See you there on Saturday.

Apple Pizza? I love apples and I love pizza, but never have had apple pizza. Cool. I will look for it!

We love Americana. Few things are as tasty and comforting as slow Dutch oven cooking to go along with those apples, Kate and Spence.

Did you mention cider? One of the little known secrets here in Humboldt is of Clendenen’s 12th Street Cider Works in Fortuna and their apple cider. Real cider—fresh and clean and good for you—and preciously unpasteurized.

You simply won’t find any unpasteurized cider elsewhere in Humboldt nor sold in stores. Why?

By law, unpasteurized juices of any sort can only be sold at ‘the point of production’ or the facility where it’s been freshly pressed. The stuff sold in stores (including Clendenen’s, too) is all pasteurized juice. But the 12th Street Cider Works has the only real and rare cider deal going on in Humboldt.

A nurse recommended this after a long course of antibiotic treatment wiped out my gut’s flora and fauna, saying ”all the local antibodies, immunities, and the good bacteria you need are in a glass of that unpasteurized apple cider.”

Clendenen’s real cider runs $5.55 for the half and $8.25 for the full gallon at the shack. But only at the shack. They keep it very cold, too. But be forewarned: it's a sweet and tasty nectar. One tall glass will easily lead to another. A few in a row will leave you with a healthy and cleansing experience-- in more ways than one.

Of course, we remember as kids discovering Grandma Ellett’s stash of Apple Jack cooling in the creek in the beautiful heartland of... Mormon Utah. Heavens! She’d bottle her apple juice or cider, add a saltine cracker and a raisin to each one, cool it in the creek for awhile. When the raisin rose to the top Grandma Ellett knew the Apple Jack was done. It was all done on the hush-hush, of course. After working the clover and alfalfa fields came Sunday dinner, usually lamb stew, new potatoes, and fresh peas. That was followed by the adults enjoying Grandma’s ‘special brew,’ all-the-happier being Above the Fold after the kids had gone to bed and a long day’s work.

Here’s something a bit more tame. See you at the Apple Harvest Festival this weekend!

APPLE ICED TEA
The perfect drink for a warm autumn evening in the garden.

Ingredients:
2 pints good-quality black tea
1 pint apple juice or cider
3-4 Tablespoons lemon juice (save a few slices for optional garnish
A tray or more of ice cubes
1-2 apples, finely diced (optional)

Brew your tea and allow it to cool. Combine with apple and lemon juice.

Add a few slices of lemon and some finely diced apple for an extra fruity hit - or omit the lemon entirely for a sweeter brew. Chill, add ice, and enjoy! Serves 8

Mark and I were going to show off our mad Dutch Ovening skills but had to back out at the last minute. We'll still be there for the tasting, though. See you there!

Shhhhh......please don't let Kate know of my affinity for pigs feet. I keep a secret stash in the garage. But, if you were to disguise them with nacho sauce in a Dutch Oven, I think she'll be none the wiser. Mresquan, you get the blue ribbon for sure.
