Blue Is The Colour of My Carpet

We are in the house hunting market.  Not to purchase, that's not our lifestyle. We're serial renters. It just suits us.  But, with that comes all of the quirks and peccadilloes associated with the landlords own sense of style. Especially, if the house belonged to the landlords' mother.  The kids want to hang on to Momma as long as possible. Now, here we come along, years later, and find a darling house from the 1950's. It has the perfect amount of built-ins, a Norman Rockwellian kitchen and you can practically see Robert Young walking in the front door to shout, "Honey, I'm Home!"  But, right off the bat, the minute you enter the home, it hits you.  And, it hits you hard......blue carpet.  Throughout the entire house.

Spence:   Kate, you know what? I love this house. It has all of that Father Knows Best charm that goes with my vinyl record collection of Andy Williams, Julie London and Louis Prima albums. I don't mind trying to blend your furniture and my accouterments into this scheme. Sure, it's gaudy and a visual affront to the senses, but I could live just about anywhere.....and have. But, honestly Kate, I will defer to your sensibilities. Right after I hear from our readers.

Kate:  I haaaaatttteeee the blue carpet.  I loved the windows, hate the bathroom, love the kitchen and the neighborhood. Did I mention the God awful blue carpet? Oy! At least the drapes don't match the carpet.

When we were house hunting recently (with middle daughter) the odd-colored carpets (blue as well as red or dark green...) was overwhelming but often matched nicely with the paneled walls. But you're right, the 80's blues that went along with "country" goose motif is lovely as well.

I installed blue carpet (well, not quite THAT blue) in my house. Relax, you'll learn to love it.

Come on come on come on.....who couldn't live with blue carpet to get Spence and Kate under one roof?

Man...I don't know. I once passed on the coolest attic apartment because its color scheme was much like your bottom picture. That's a tough decision, but I like Anonymous's enthusiasm for your cohabitation.

Not a problem. Been through this many times, Kate and Spence. No worries! Dr. Skips to the rescue.

3 Easy Solutions:

1. Wear rose-colored glasses. Blue is the new Peach.

2. Rent a Rug Doctor. Fill tank with bleach. Clean rug. Let dry. Fill tank with Ritz Dye and repeat. Voila! Go for the Flaming Fuchsia or aim for an Electric Yellow look. Mauve and Chartreuse were nice choices but now passe. Lime is so 70s. One Brady short of the Bunch.

3. Do all of the above, have a Pink Martini while wearing Groucho glasses, look lovingly at each other and laugh while repeating "Nyuck nyuck nyuck."

(I'm not a real doctor but I should play one on TV)

Either the potential landlord is reading this blog or he himself is so embarrassed by the blue carpet that he said (without prompting) that he is changing the carpet.

Spence: Lime Green, eh Skippy?
Kate: I liked the 70s.

You always match the carpet color to the color of dirt around your home. When's the move-in date!

Alas, we had to let the blue carpeted castle go. Maybe next time. Onward in the house hunt.

Well, I must say, there is a lot of blue in the house. If you want to see the whole picture of your home using different colors, I suggest putting up samples of colors, textures, and photos of interior accessories. This way, you will have an idea how a particular room will look once everything is in place. One great tip is to apply a variety of colors, even with the decors. This will help accentuate the accessories. Kate, tell Spence not to be afraid to mix-match colors.
