See's The Moment

From now until December, 24th, the Fortuna Sunrise Rotary Club is selling See's candy at Redwood Village Shopping Center.  Here you'll find all of the See's favorites--one and two pound boxes of assorted chocolates, nuts and chews, peanut brittle, peppermint delights and other candy novelties.  They make the perfect holiday present for the hard to buy for. You know.....the elderly.

Kate and I signed up to take a few shifts manning the store.  Last night, I had a go at it.  Whew....let me tell you, I haven't worked in retail since I was fired from Circle K putting in just three weeks worth of work in 1978.  I've never quite got the hang of it.

While I have a gift for gab, (as Kate can quite attest to) which works well for customer service,  I struggle with the mechanics of retail work. Mostly, the monetary transaction.  Nowadays, everything is done by credit card.  The Rotary Club has the old fashioned slide-the-card-over-the-paper dealies.  When I used it, the customers looked at me like I still owned a rotary phone and my privy had a crescent moon on it.

All-in-all, working retail for one day after 33 years wasn't so bad. And the customers where quite cheery, probably since they were buying candy.  One lady bought $148 worth of See's Candy.  Then she turned to me and said, "There, all of my shopping is done"  Well, there you go.

It's all for a good cause. (The American Cancer Society and Rotary community projects) and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.......33 years from now.

I used that exact type of machine in mother's store in 1973! At least there's not all that carbon paper with the new fangled credit card slips!

Yes, I'll "man" up to using that phrase.
