Spicy & Sweet

Happy Christmas, Everyone!

The Editors are traveling with our Chilean exchange student, Emilio, for Christmas.  Destination: a remote fishing village on the coast of Oregon to visit with Kate's family.

Emilio is enamored by all things American. He wants to buy everything he sees, mostly because popular items are so cheap here in America.   So, of course he wants a pair of the Air Jordan sneakers from the 90's that have come back onto the market as a retro must-have. We guess they may be the Cabbage Patch doll or Tickle Me Elmo of Christmas 2011.

Other trends include the Keurig (sp?) coffee maker, (which in 2005 Kate thought would never hit mainstream when she worked at Bed Bath & Beyond.  "This will never catch on", she thought. But, she said the same thing about the Blackberry smart phone.

Spence will miss some of the traditional Eastern Humboldt County rituals, like the annual touch football game at the Elementary School and Brussels sprouts/bacon surprise.  That's not to say he's not looking forward to a holiday on the Umpqua.

We have spent the morning reflecting on Christmases past--Kate in New York with an old boyfriend's Brooklyn/Italian/Catholic family and their scungili and calamari Christmas Eve dinner (although they never pronounced the "i"s at the end); and Spence's Christmas of '64 along the Trinity River spent sleeping in 2 cars while watching the town float away.

Each year has it's own special flavor--may this Christmas make memories that are spicy and sweet.

Merry Christmas "Spence and Kate" and Emilio.

Spence, you can't talk about the '64 flood anymore, first they thought that logging caused it, now they just plain don't believe it really happened. Almost nobody can believe that it rained that much.
